The Alexander Technique

Every day, we carry out a striking number of movements the same habitual way — sitting, standing, walking, reaching for things — almost all of it automatic, done without a moment's awareness. The Alexander Technique begins with noticing that habit.

Lessons are given mainly through two forms of hands-on work: chair work and table work. In chair work, a student and teacher look closely, together, at standing, sitting, and the movement between the two. By taking time with movements we usually do without thinking, a small pause opens up before the automatic response — and in that pause, a different way of moving becomes possible. In table work, the student lies on their back with knees bent, feet resting on the table, and a book supporting the head. With the back fully supported by the table, balance comes more easily than it does standing up, which makes the same practice more accessible — and easier to feel the body loosen and lengthen rather than tighten. The aim is never to chase a particular result, but to value the process itself; curiosity and a quiet sense of well-being tend to arrive as natural by-products along the way. What is practiced here — taking a pause, and letting the body be guided — carries over gradually into the movements of everyday life. Group classes explore the same kind of awareness through simple, shared activities.

My StoryMy Story

I first encountered the Alexander Technique because I was looking for greater ease in my own body. As I continued with lessons, I began to feel a certain comfort not only in my body, but in the way I was, and noticed that I was enjoying life more than before. Wanting to understand what was happening in this change led me to pursue training as an Alexander Technique teacher.

What to Expect in a Lesson

What is an Alexander Technique lesson like?
Change doesn't start with correcting — it starts with noticing. Alexander Technique is a way of discovering, within yourself, the ability to notice your habits and change them. The teacher is on their own ongoing process of change too — and it's that lived experience that lets them guide you through yours.
What happens during a lesson?
  • We start with a short conversation about what's on your mind or what you'd like to work on
  • Chair work: standing, sitting, walking, and moving between activities — you experience each everyday movement carefully and attentively
  • Table work: lying on your back on a massage table, knees bent, with a book or two supporting your head
  • We close with time to reflect. If you'd like, we can also apply what came up to your own practice — playing an instrument, singing, or other forms of physical expression
What's my role as the student?
You move through the lesson guided by the teacher, but the awareness and choices are yours. There's no "correct" position to find — you're simply invited to explore through your own sensing. It's an active, self-directed process.
What happens on the table?
Your whole back is supported by the table and receives feedback from the ground beneath it. This makes it easier to find balance than when you're standing or sitting, which in turn makes it easier to bring attention to your own thinking, and to notice the changes as they happen.
How does progress happen?
Many people notice a difference in how they use their body after just one session, but real change comes from awareness building gradually. A good starting point is once a week for about ten lessons — that pace tends to make the accumulation easier to feel. There's no set limit beyond that; each additional lesson tends to bring new discoveries, so it's fine to continue at whatever pace works for you.
